Where to find the best cycle routes?

Previous navigation systems were made to guide motor vehicles through the road network. Attempts to find practical, and particularly beautiful, routes for bicycles with the help of a navigation system often ended in disappointment, since many of the best cycle routes follow less well-known roads and paths that are outside the common road system. Until now, these innumerable “hidden paths” could rarely be found by someone travelling in an area where they did not already know their way around.

Naviki is a new type of navigation system for bikes. With Naviki it is possible to find ideal bike routes, even in unfamiliar areas - conveniently and quickly via the internet.

Naviki – the easy way to discover secret paths

Naviki combines different bike routes so that you obtain a suitable route from your given starting point to your destination - as easily as in road navigation, and designed specifically for the bike.

How does Naviki obtain the cyclist’s knowledge?

In Naviki any cyclist can publish their recommended routes online. In this way  a comprehensive collection develops, just as it did with the internet encyclopedia, Wikipedia. With many different users contributing to it, Wikipedia has become a nearly faultless encyclopedia. In a similar way Naviki will be optimised by its users: any user can update and correct routes if he or she wishes to. Apart from information about the route itself, you can also enter hints about any major or minor notable detail along the way. This information forms the basis on which new routes can be calculated for other Naviki users. Naviki particularly includes the data of the OpenStreetMap (OSM) project. Currently this data gives Naviki the basis to provide detailed routing information for a wide spatial extent.

What do I need in order to use Naviki?

Previous knowledge is not necessary. Both the publication and the calculation of routes are easy and self-explanatory.

With a GPS-navigation device or a mobile phone with navigation function you can put Naviki to the best possible use. Satellite navigation will soon be part of the standard components of mobile phones, as is the in-built camera. Additionally, you need to have access to the internet via computer or mobile phone.

What are the costs for the user?

With Naviki, both the publication of your own routes and the search for routes are free. The only costs that arise are the normal costs for the use of the internet and telephone.

Naviki offers the opportunity to travel along the best “insider routes”, even in areas one has never been to before. Thus Naviki brings advantages to all those who cycle – in everyday life as well as in their leisure time, on holiday or taking part in bike sports.
